Non-Gaussian Error Distribution of Hubble Constant Measurements
We construct the error distribution of Hubble constant (H0) measurements from Huchra’s compilation of 461 measurements of H0 and the WMAP experiment central value H0 = 71 km s −1 Mpc−1. This error distribution is non-Gaussian, with significantly larger probability in the tails of the distribution than predicted by a Gaussian distribution. The 95.4 % confidence limits are 7.0 σ in terms of the q...
متن کامل2 Probability Distribution of the Hubble Constant
We present a method to compute the probability distribution function of the (true) Hubble constant and the age of the universe, given the estimate of the Hubble constant in our nearby galaxy samples. Our method takes into account both the observational errors and the cosmic variance, and enables to quantitatively compute the constraints on the cosmological models. Based on the present local obs...
متن کاملThe Hubble Constant from Sze Measurements in Low-redshift Clusters
We present a determination of the Hubble constant from measurements of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect (SZE) in an orientation-unbiased sample of 7 z < 0.1 galaxy clusters. With improved X-ray models and a more accurate 32-GHz calibration, we obtain H0 = 64 +14 −11 ± 14syskmsec Mpc for a standard CDM cosmology, or H0 = 66 +14 −11 ± 15syskm sec Mpc for a flat ΛCDM cosmology. The random uncertainty ...
متن کاملThe Hubble Constant
Considerable progress has been made in determining the Hubble constant over the past two decades. We discuss the cosmological context and importance of an accurate measurement of the Hubble constant, and focus on six high-precision distance-determination methods: Cepheids, tip of the red giant branch, maser galaxies, surface-brightnes fluctuations, the TullyFisher relation and Type Ia supernova...
متن کاملThe Hubble Constant
I review the current state of determinations of the Hubble constant, which gives the length scale of the Universe by relating the expansion velocity of objects to their distance. There are two broad categories of measurements. The first uses individual astrophysical objects which have some property that allows their intrinsic luminosity or size to be determined, or allows the determination of t...
